Swedish scientists to put an end to spam
Swedish scientists have found a way to put a halt to spam by tracking down where it originates.
Researchers at Chalmers, a university of technology in Gothenburg in southwest Sweden, has realized that the way to get rid of unwanted e-mail is not by traditional spam-fighting carried out at the receiving end.
Instead, the group has identified new network-based methods of tracking down where spam originates. By finding the starting place, the spam can be stopped as close to the source as possible.
The Swedish Internet Infrastructure Foundation, the body responsible for registering domain names with the ending “.se”, will support the research project with 2 million kronor (€200 million, $286 milllion) over a period of three years.
“Spam and malware, such as spyware, constitute major problems for end-users, companies, organisations and network providers alike”, the foundation wrote in a statement. “In its initiative to support Swedish research .SE takes into consideration the acute need of new methods to make e-mail more reliable”.
E-mail has become one of our most important tools for communication. However, some 90 percent of all e-mails are said to be spam.
The foundation is also funding two other research projects at Blekinge Institute of Technology and Linköping University with the aims to fight malware and spyware.
