Stockholm firms offer data centres of the future
• Sweden among top in Internet download speed
With a hard-wearing infrastructure, secure locations and green power, Stockholm is home to a growing number of cutting-edge data centres that provide unique services for internet users in the Nordic region and Russia.
Sweden is the European leader in sustainable technologies and the climate actually helps provide free cooling for data centers most of the year, explained Torbjörn Bengtsson, the ICT business development manager at Stockholm Business Region.
“Stockholm is superbly located to cover not only the Nordic countries but also Russia with fiber routes to St. Petersburg and Moscow in a secure and stable environment,” he told The Swedish Wire. “More than 80 percent of Russian Internet traffic passes through Stockholm.”
Modular Data Center (MDC) Stockholm AB is an example of a Stockholm-based company whose innovation is respected internationally.
This fall, the firm plans to debut a pilot project for a new model of data centre infrastructure. It’s designed to be more portable, scalable and efficient than the traditional racks of servers. It’s also a lot more stylish.
“It’s like Lego,” John Karlung, the company’s chief executive officer, told Forbes. “Instead of building a huge empty data center that costs a lot of money, you start with one module. And then when you need another you just connect it–ka-chunk!–and then the next, and the next, until you have an entire city of these modules.”
Top 10 reasons to choose Stockholm data centers:
1. Low and consistent electricity rates
2. Favourable climate; free cooling at least 8-10 months of the year
3. Excellent communications infrastructure
4. World-leading heating and cooling systems
5. Green electricity; 60% from renewable sources
6. Green thinking – GDP growth with reduced environmental impact
7. Attractive corporate, real estate and investment tax schemes
8. Inexpensive greenfield and brownfield sites
9. Outstanding ICT skills
10. Security and stability – political, economic and physicalSource: Stockholm Business Region
