WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Barack Obama on Friday called new Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt to congratulate him on his election win and to discuss the threat posed by Al-Qaeda and allies to Europe.

"President Obama called Prime Minister Reinfeldt of Sweden today to congratulate the Prime Minister on his re-election," the White House said in a short statement.

"The President thanked the Prime Minister for Sweden’s leadership on a broad range of issues, including Swedish support for the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan."

The leaders also discussed US and Swedish collaboration in the fight against the threat posed by Al-Qaeda and its extremist allies to Europe, the statement said.

Reinfeldt presented his new government to the Swedish parliament on Tuesday, confirming that he would govern with the minority his coalition was handed after the September 19 election.
