Swedish HIV vaccine surprisingly good

“These are the best preliminary results I’m aware of for a vaccine of this type,” a vaccine expert said about a new Swedish HIV vaccine.

The Swedish vaccine Hivis has showed surprisingly good test results after being tested on volunteer patients in an experiment in Tanzania.

“This is both much unexpected and a very good result. The vaccine is not harmful to the patient and it creates a resistance to the virus,” Britta Wahren, professor emeritus at Sweden's Karolinska Institute and one of the scientists behind the project, told daily Dagens Nyheter.

The people who have been given the new vaccine developed both specific immune cells targeting HIV-infiltrated cells as well as antibodies against HIV and other viral strains contained within the vaccine.

“These are the best preliminary results I’m aware of for a vaccine of this type,” European Union vaccine expert Manuel Romaris told the newspaper.

“It’s extremely interesting. The Swedish researchers seem to be on the right track.”
