The British Chamber of Commerce is hoping to turn the country’s hosting of this summer’s Olympic Games — a once-in-a-generation opportunity to promote the UK abroad — into business opportunities in Sweden.

The British-Swedish Chamber of Commerce (BSCC) in Stockholm plays the role of matchmaker, helping companies from the two countries find business opportunities in areas like finance, life sciences and information technology.

“2012 has been a very active year with high profile speakers like Carl-Henric Svanberg and two UK Ministers,” said the outgoing Secretary General Ingrid Berggren and her successor Christina Liljeström, in a joint statement with Cecilia Stråberg.

“We continue to cooperate with our partners like HSBC, BT, UKTI, Handelsbanken to arrange interesting meetings and events.”

Which current projects in Stockholm are important to you?
“BSCC is always involved in projects and matters relevant to our members.

“We have a major membership base in the financial industry and hence projects related to that industry are always on the agenda,” they said.

What can your members gain from taking part in the annual networking event with the City of Stockholm 25 October?
“The guests coming on the 25th can reach a new group of companies and discover potential business opportunities.

They could, as last year, also meet with reps from the municipalities from cities outside of Stockholm.

“Furthermore, the speakers and the representatives from Stockholm municipality and Stockholm Business Region are of high quality and very interesting.”

The GREAT campaign was launched in New York last year and was designed to use the platform of the Olympic and Paralympic games to showcase Britain’s capabilities, to promote and enhance its reputation abroad and to maximise the economic potential of the games.

“It is a chance for the world to re-discover the unique qualities that make Britain such a compelling destination – for business and tourism, for innovation and entrepreneurship, for world-class creativity and culture,” Prime Minister David Cameron said at the time.

In 2014 The British-Swedish Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 60th birthday.
