The two were contracted construction workers who had been inspecting the shaft inside the Malmberg mine in Swedish Lapland, the LKAB mining company said.

"Two people have been found dead," LKAB spokesman Anders Lindberg told AFP, adding that the pair were in a lift basket attached to a mobile crane when it fell.

"The mobile crane the basket was attached to was at a depth of 1,040 metres (3,412 feet) and the basket was found at 1,136 metres. We don't know where in the shaft they were when the basket fell. We don't know how far they fell," Lindberg said.

He said it remained unclear how the accident occurred.

"That is something we will investigate immediately," he said.
