Earlier this month General Motors hired the consulting firm AlixPartners "to supervise the orderly wind-down of Saab”. As GM now has agreed to sell Saab to Dutch sports-car maker Spyker their services will not be needed.

“This means that now we can send home the liquidators" Anette Hellgren, chairman of the union at the factory in Trollhättan, told the TT news wire.

The agreement still hinges on the Swedish government agreeing to guarantee a 400 million-euro ($566 million) loan from the European Investment Bank for the Swedish carmaker. The wind down activities at Saab will be immediately suspended, pending the close of the transaction.

Anette Hellgren expects that production will continue in Trollhättan, southwest Sweden, where 3,400 people are employed.

“Now there are only opportunities", she said happily.
