End of road for legendary Swedish brand Saab
GM decision to shut down Saab marks the end for one of the world’s best-known brands.

In 1937 Saab was founded in Trollhättan, southwest Sweden, to build aeroplanes for the Swedish Air Force. But just a few years later the company started making cars and quickly became famous for both stylish design and safety.
The company built its first prototype cars in 1947 with the first production version rolling off the assembly line two years later.
Friday’s decision by its parent General Motors to wind-down Saab’s operations is sad not only for the 3,400 employees but thousands and thousands of loyal customers across the world.
Under GM's stewardship spanning almost two decades, Saab rarely posted a profit and last year lost 3.0 billion kronor (241 million euros, 341 million dollars at the time).
