Mona Sahlin, leader of Sweden’s main opposition party Social Democrats, doesn’t rule out cutting state ownership in Swedish companies, such as telecom operator TeliaSonera and Nordea Bank.

“I’m not saying that the percentage we have today should be one that we have forever” in TeliaSonera, Mona Sahlin told Bloomberg News ahead of the September 2010 election, adding that the state can influence the company with a smaller stake than the 37.3 percent it currently owns.

The Social Democrats is part of the Red-Greens alliance of opposition parties in Sweden, formed last year, alongside the Greens and Left Party. The alliance will present its common policy on state-owned-companies "well ahead" of next year's election, Mona Sahlin said.

Since gaining power 2006 the center-right government, led by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, has sold Absolut vodka maker Vin & Sprit AB, property company Vasakronan, part of stock-market operator OMX (owned by Nasdaq) and parts of its holding in TeliaSonera.

The government also plans sell stakes in the Nordic regions largest bank Nordea, mortgage lender SBAB and more of TeliaSonera. The Social Democrats seems to be on the same page.

“I don’t see a reason that the state should own banks just for the sake of it,” Mona Sahlin told the newswire when asked about whether she would be willing to sell part of the state’s 19.8 percent stake in Nordea Bank.

However, she is not willing to sell stakes in state-owned Vattenfall AB, the Nordic region’s largest utility.

“Vattenfall is an important European company whose large revenue makes it possible for the company to be more active in the changeover to green energy. It’s deeply unfortunate to buy coal for 100 billion kronor,” Sahlin said, referring to Vattenfall’s acquisition of Dutch Nuon Energy this year.
