Many Canadian companies are using Stockholm as a hub for business in the Nordic region but also to tap into Sweden’s flourishing life science, mining and telecoms markets, according to Canada’s trade commissioner to Stockholm, Carl Pilon.

“When Canadian companies approach us regarding setting up a presence in the Nordics we certainly emphasise the centrality of Stockholm to the entire region, as well as the friendly business environment, the cultural similarities between Canada and Sweden, the skilled and multilingual workforce and of course the attractiveness of the location,” Pilon told the Swedish Wire.

“We believe those are all assets that make the location a great choice for a regional hub.”

It’s primarily exporters, investors, innovators and scientists that are taking advantage of the embassy’s commercial assistance. Most effort is put into sectors that are dynamic in both Sweden and Canada, such as information technology and telecoms, life sciences, forestry, mining, and the green technology sector.

“We are always on the lookout for exciting business opportunities for our clients, as what they value the most is when we are able to pinpoint a Swedish company that is looking for something that a Canadian supplier can provide,” Pilon said.

“We keep our eyes and ears open to make sure we are aware of everything that is going on in Stockholm.”

The Embassy also regularly organises events that bring Canadians and Swedes together.

Over the next few weeks it will be host a delegation from British Columbia that is travelling to Sweden to talk about the biogas sector. The province of Alberta is also sending representatives from its life science sector to further its collaboration with Stockholm Science City.

The annual networking event with the City of Stockholm on 25 October is a great opportunity to make new contacts and reinforce existing relationships, Pilon said.

“Those participating in the event can expect a great opportunity to network with other dynamic companies located in the greater Stockholm area, as well as the chance to mingle and chat with decision-makers from several local municipalities from the region,” he said.
