OSLO (AFP) - Norwegian Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjørn Jagland said Friday he did not know who would come to Oslo to get the Nobel Peace Prize awarded on Friday to jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.
"Who will be present at the Nobel ceremony? We don't know yet. It's not something that we take into account when we chose the laureate," he told reporters.
Liu, 54, is currently serving an 11-year jail sentence handed down to him in December for subversion -- a punishment that earned international condemnation.
The writer was previously jailed for his involvement in the 1989 Tienanmen pro-democracy protests.
Jagland said Friday the committee did not manage to reach Liu or his wife to tell them he had won the prestigious award.
"We will ask the Chinese authorities to pass the message onto Liu," he said.
The Nobel Peace Prize is traditionally awarded in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who founded the Nobel prizes.
