Italy’s foreign minister Franco Frattini demands that EU condemn a Swedish newspaper story accusing Israeli soldiers of smuggling dead Palestinians' organs.
In an interview with to Israeli daily Haaretz, Franco Frattini pointed out that the report, published in Aftonbladet, is an "acts of blatant anti-Semitism”.
"There are limits to freedom of the press that stem from respect for the truth and the duty of every journalist to prove his claims," he told Haaretz.
Oddly, he also said that he and his Swedish counterpart Carl Bildt had settled that the EU foreign ministers would condemn the report during their informal meeting in Stockholm this week. Carl Bildt rejected such a claim.
Sweden’s Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt told the TT news bureau that he would make a statement regarding the government’s position on this issue soon. However, a condemnation is not likely as Sweden’s constitution strongly holds up the freedom of the press.
"It's important for me to say that you cannot turn to the Swedish government and ask it to violate the Swedish constitution," he was quoted as saying by TT last week.
