• China warns Western countries:
Stay away from the Nobel ceremony, or else...

OSLO (AFP) - The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Saturday invited peace prize laureate Aung Saan Suu Kyi to Oslo, after Myanmar authorities had stopped her from picking up her award in 1991, NTB news agency said.

Thorbjørn Jagland, the committee's chairman, said the Myanmar activist who was freed from house arrest earlier Saturday should travel to Oslo as soon as possible, to make her traditional acceptance speech.

Her prize was accepted by her two sons when she was prevented from travelling to Norway.

Jagland asked Myanmar authorities to give Suu Kyi guarantees that she would be allowed to return to her country if she is allowed to leave, NTB reported.

"I suppose she will not want to leave Burma without such a guarantee," he said.

Her release was an encouragement for all political prisoners including 2010 laureate Liu Xiaobo of China, he added.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre welcomed her release after seven years under house arrest and said Suu Kyi should be able to "enjoy all freedoms that she is entitled to including the freedom to travel wherever she wants and to speak to whomever she wants".
