Swedes living abroad could start voting in Sweden’s general election on Thursday, more than a month before it officially takes place September 19.
Swedes living abroad remain in the electoral register, and so maintain their right to vote. In the last election, four years ago, more than 50,000 Swedes voted from around the world.
This year some 130,000 Swedish citizens have registered their foreign addresses with the election authorities, Swedish Radio News said. They now have the opportunity to send in their votes by mail.
In April the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in London hosted a pre-election debate aimed at Swedes living in the UK.
“It is always fun to the soak up the atmosphere abroad. To see what the perspective on Sweden is from the Swedes living here. It is a more intercultural perspective”, Kenneth G Forslund, representative for the Social Democrats said during the debate.
According to the organization Svenskar i Världen (Swedes in the World) approximately half a million Swedes live abroad, which could be compared with the country’s total population of nine million.
