Police nab suspects in Swedish murder probe
WARSAW, November 17, 2011 (AFP) - Police in Poland said Thursday they had detained two Polish nationals suspected of a brutal double homicide in Sweden, a national police headquarters statement said.
"Under a European arrest warrant, the men fell into the hands of the police just days after they left Sweden," the statement said, identifying the suspects only as 33-year-old Miroslaw T. and 40-year-old Jacek T. hailing from Slupsk, northern Poland.
The men are suspected of what police describe as the "brutal murder of two Swedish citizens aged 70 and 71" on the morning of October 19 in Gothenburg, western Sweden.
Neither of the suspects admitted to the crime, Polish prosecutors said.
"After tying up and gagging the victims, they bludgeoned the man in the head with a heavy object and strangled the woman. After the murder, they robbed the victims' home and safe," the police statement said.
A Polish court is expected to rule soon on the suspects being handed-over to Swedish justice authorities for trial.
