Grexit threat to Europe’s security and defence
A Grexit would call into question Greece’s participation in security and defence organisations within the European Union, senior defence analysts Guy Anderson and Fenella McGerty from IHS Aerospace, Defence & Security said in an analysis.
Key findings:
• A Grexit would call into question Greece’s participation in security and defence organisations within the European Union, such as the European Defence Agency.
• Should economic support from creditors dry up (and if Greece were to exit the eurozone), there could be deeper consequences for both the national industry and international partners.
• Greek defence spending is almost below 1.5% of GDP, and could drop further if a Grexit occurs, which would be problematic for needed defence upgrades.
The economic consequences of a default would preclude a return to the state spending and support that sustained some of Greek’s highest profile defence organisations before the financial crisis, they said.
