Swedish carmaker Saab will start cooperate with Germany's Bayerische Motoren Werke, BMW, Reuters said Monday, referring to Dutch public broadcaster NOS. The cooperation will give the Swedish loss-making manufacturer access to BMW's technology and parts.
The two companies are expected to sign the deal on Wednesday regarding a long-term partnership, the broadcaster said, citing "reliable" sources at the two car makers.
Speculation on a collaboration between Saab and BMW also surfaced in June, saying Saab would be able to use BMW’s engines and transmissions in a new version of the 9-2 model. The new model is a retro looking car based on the classic Saab 92 from the 1950s.
The automakers are also in talks about Saab buying diesel engines from BMW.
Saab was bought early this year by Dutch luxury carmaker Spyker from U.S.-based General Motors. Saab’s chairman Victor Muller, founder of Spyker, is said t be eager to launch a mini car.
Saab and BMW declined to comment.
