Daniel Birnbaum lands Sweden’s most prestigious art position.

• Dior and Chanel to go under the hammer

The Swedish minister for culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth on Thursday appointed Daniel Birnbaum as the new head of the Museum of Modern Art, Moderna Museet, as its current director Lars Nittve steps down.

“This is probably the most internationally acclaimed position within the Swedish art and culture sector”, Mårten Jansson, editor of global perspectives at the Swedish Traveling Exhibitions, a governmental authority that produces and tours exhibitions, told The Swedish Wire. “Birnbaum has made a name of himself on the international art scene. He’s defenately a good pick”.

Daniel Birnbaum is a philosopher, critic and curator. He’s previously director for the International Artists Studio Program in Stockholm, IASPIS, and rector at Städelschule Staatliche Hochschule in Frankfurt am Main.

"I am delighted that the Government has made a decision regarding my successor. It seems to be a solution most likely to assure a continuous development of the Moderna Museet's unique character.", said Lars Nittve, who resigns in October.

The Museum of Modern Art, that houses Swedish and international modern and contemporary art, is a state museum located on the island of Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm. It was first opened in 1958.
