A Stockholm biotechnology company has taken steps to put an end to one of the planet’s most common medical complaints – allergies.
Researchers at Swecure have identified a bacterial protein with a unique ability to activate immunological tolerance mechanisms that then prevent the future development of allergies.
Lars Fahlén, CEO of Swecure, explained that no similar product exists on the market or is in the current pipeline of any big pharmaceutical company, meaning Swecure and its sister company Premune have massive potential going forward.
Currently, research is being conducted on dogs, with the results expected to be presented in the summer of 2015.
“A positive result of those studies would mean a lot for both companies,” said Fahlén. “It would also mean a lot for the wider community to tackle this enormous public health problem.”
The Swedish capital is a hot spot for the biotechnology industry with research institutes in a number of different areas and other clusters of companies.
“Having the company’s management in Stockholm brings many advantages, especially from a business point of view,” Fahlén said. “Stockholm is the capital of Scandinavia and closeness to investors and other parties is of great importance.”
Today, Swecure works on five projects at any one time, with time to market up to eight years in the future, Fahlén said. Swecure is a portfolio company of Serendipity Ixora, a venture capital firm specializing in research-intensive ventures.
