Stockholm Songwriting Camp invites global hit makers
In September, Stockholm based music producer and songwriter Max Martin made history when the song Shake It Off, performed by Taylor Swift, became his 18th Billboard number one single.
Now, he is one of the people behind a unique songwriting camp in the Swedish capital designed to attract some of the world’s top talent.
Stockholm Songwriting Camp offers both up-and-coming songwriters and more established music creators an opportunity to write music together in new groups and an inspiring environment.
“For me it has always been about the match between a good song and a good artist, to already know at the time of writing which artist the material is a good fit for,” Max Martin said. “Then it usually works out well.”
The songwriting camp has been organised by cloud service Auddly and ABBA The Museum, in collaboration with the Swedish Society of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (SKAP) and Stockholm Business Region.
Stockholm has long been established as a hub for songwriters. It is one of the world’s most successful cites for global, chart-topping music relative to its size, which in large part is thanks to its exceptional songwriters.
Swedish music legends Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, half of the ABBA quartet, famously said: “In the music industry, everything always begins and ends with a good song”.
ABBA was one of the first big Swedish musical exports, and is still a model for music creators from all over the world. For that reason, Stockholm Songwriting Camp is held at ABBA The Museum in Stockholm. All of the neighbouring Melody Hotel is reserved for the event so songwriters have an opportunity to create day and night.
“I know from experience that it can be inspiring for creativity to sometimes break from the usual and go somewhere where you can devote every waking moment to writing, undisturbed,” Ulvaeus, who is one of the initiators of the songwriting effort, said.
Several other well-known personalities from the world of music will also be part of the camp. Details of who will be announced later.
A selection committee consisting of representatives from Auddly, SKAP and the British copyright organization PRS for Music Foundation will select the 45 participants, which will be made up of an equal number of men and women.
As a result of sponsorship from organisers SKAP and Stockholm Business Region, the camp is free for the participants.
Their job will be able to focus on the music.
Stockholm Songwriting Camp runs from 29 January to 1 February 2015.
