Sweden to pass the 10 million mark in 2021
Since 2006 Sweden has experienced record levels of immigration.
• Sweden ranked world's most networked economy
During the coming ten years, the population is expected to increase by slightly more than 600 000 persons, and will pass the 10 million mark in 2021, the statistics office said Thursday.
Since 2006 Sweden has experienced record levels of immigration and this year is expected to be another record year with 103 000 immigrants, such as foreign professionals, refugees and students.
The increase in population is also explained by the fact that Sweden has long shown a strong relation between childbearing and the economic cycle. But the most recent economic crisis has not had any effect on total number of births.
The fertility rate for 2010 is estimated at 1.97 children per woman. Not since 1993 has the fertility rate been so high in Sweden.
Sweden's population passed the 9 million mark in 2004. Eleven years from now the population is expected to reach 10 million.
