Danish newspaper erects barbed-wire fence

The Danish newspaper that sparked outrage by publishing cartoons of Prophet Mohammed in 2005 said Tuesday it had erected a barbed-wire fence around its offices for protection from terrorist attacks.

The Jyllands-Posten daily set up a 2.5-metre (8-foot) high, one-kilometre (0.6-mile) long fence around its headquarters in Visby near the western city of Aarhus following a recommendation from the Danish security and intelligence service (PET).

"We would have liked not to have the fence, but we are following the PET's recommendations", editor-in-chief Joern Mikkelsen told Danish news agency Ritzau.

Jyllands-Posten published in 2005 a dozen cartoons, including one featuring Prophet Mohammed wearing a turban shaped like a bomb with a lit fuse, which angered many Muslims worldwide and sparked angry protests.

Jyllands-Posten staff received many deaths threats after the controversial drawings were published, but Mikkelsen did not say if the fence was prompted by new threats.

The paper's management had already hiked up security at its offices.
