Dating sites boom in Sweden

Business booms at world's biggest sperm bank

Outside the US and the UK, the Nordic countries are the strongest markets for online dating, according to Johan Siwers, managing director for Match.com. New competitors, he told Swedish Radio News, seem to be popping up every day.

It's becoming more and more common that Swedes meet their new partners on the net as dating sites are booming in popularity, a survey by market research group Sifo showed. More than three million Swedes have tried net dating, making up a third of the total population of nine million.

Today Sweden has the most singles per population in the world, Swedish Radio said, indicating that online dating has a promising future in the Scandinavian country.

But there are drawbacks. Roland Paulsen, a sociologist at Uppsala University, has been investigating the phenomena for some years and pointed out that people who met via the web sometimes got disappointed when they met in real life. The let down was usually related to looks.
