With spring just around the corner, a lot of Swedes summon their golf clubs from garages or polish and wax their boats in the yards. They are probably plotting diligently how to make the most use of the long-awaited vernal season this year.

Engaging in any kind of outdoor sports seems a sure reward for those who braved the long and harsh winter and a great way to nourish their bodies and minds. But I would like to challenge you to explore another source of mental relaxation this spring in the fourth largest city of the Swedish Kingdom, richly steeped in ecclesiastical and academic traditions.

My invitation goes to every art lover in and around the ancient city of Uppsala. You are welcome to the Uppsala Art Museum to survey contemporary artworks from halfway around the world, namely the Republic of Korea. This exhibition will be held from 9th of April to 5th of June and could be viewed as an extension of the previous display held in Stockholm between early February and mid March, drawing a significant media attention and achieving success there.

The exhibition titled “A Glocal View – Korean Contemporary Art” is curated by the director of the Uppsala Art Museum, Elisabeth Fagerstedt and co-curated by Korean curtor Miyoung von Platen. The upcoming display will feature various genres of art by four internationally recognized artists Bae Joonsung, Jung Yeondoo, Kim Dong Yoo and Lee Dongwook. Their works on display range from video art to palm-sized sculptures and paintings with the surfaces constantly changing depending on the viewpoint.

Sweden has not experienced any major military conflict or dramatic social upheavals on its soil over the past 200 years. On the other hand, Korea has transformed itself from a hermit kingdom in the Far East to one of the most dynamic economies of the world. The country has gone thorough a major civil conflict, followed by a military coup and democratic reforms.

When you visit the contemporary art exhibition at the Uppsala Art Museum this spring, you might be able to discern how this historic experience has affected   artists to form their own perspectives and at the same time, how the pull of globalization has interacted with local art traditions to produce the contemporary art scene in Korea.
