Art Basel puts spotlight on Hong Kong art hub

The tallest building in Hong Kong will be transformed into a glowing art installation, a beacon showing off the city's ambition to be recognised as a major cultural hub with its second Art Basel fair.

The first began last Thursday with British artist Tracy Emin’s work “My Heart Is With You Always” emblazoning the 30-story tower of the Peninsula Hotel, which is sponsoring the piece. Inspired by her series of works rendering her own handwriting in neon, the installation is splashing the title’s words with laser lights on the building for 10 days from 7 p.m. to midnight. And this week, German artist Carsten Nicolai, whose specialty is light and sound installations, will take control of the International Commerce Centre, the city’s tallest building.

Art Basel made a splashy entrance in Hong Kong last year with its first fair in the city. Now, the Hong Kong edition of the global art franchise that’s synonymous with glitzy parties and the global jet-set crowd is searching for an identity.

Art Basel has also announced that from 2015 onwards Art Basel in Hong Kong will take place in March. The new timing will be significantly more convenient for participating galleries, collectors, curators, and the artworld in general, enabling a broader international audience to attend the leading fair in Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.

"We are delighted to have secured dates that will help Art Basel's show in Hong Kong reach its full potential as a key fixture on the international art calendar,' says
Magnus Renfrew, Director Asia, Art Basel. "We are confident that the new March dates will encourage premier galleries worldwide to apply for the show and lead to an even stronger presence of collectors, curators and museum directors from around the world.'
