GM extends deadline for Saab sell-off

Two days before General Motors’ deadline for the sale of its loss-making Swedish Saab unit runs out enthusiasts of the 72-year-old brand will gather outside GM’s head office in Detroit in a move to save the carmaker from shutdown.

“If there are enough Saab owners and enthusiasts parked outside of the GM Renaissance center in Detroit, perhaps we could really show them how serious we are in wanting Saab Automobile to have a bright future and be sold” said Ryan Emge, editor of SaabHistory.com, an independent promotional news site.

Saab owners and enthusiasts from the U.S. and Canada will gather near the GM Renaissance Center at approximately 1pm Tuesday by showing their unwavering Saab spirit in lining up their Saabs, a statement said.

On Thursday, January 7th, a deadline will expire and GM will ultimately need to decide the fate of Saab Automobile. There are two known interested parties that have submitted bids to buy Saab, Netherlands-based Spyker Cars and Wyoming-based Merbanco.

Also the new web site, www.iwontbuyfromgm.com, features postings from angry Saab owners.

Saab, which has barely turned a profit in two decades under GM management, employs about 3,400 people in Sweden. Media reports suggest a Saab closure could lead to more than 8,000 job losses, including subcontractors.
