Amazon makes Stockholm regional HQ

When Amazon Web Services (AWS) first launched its cloud-computing platform a decade ago, Swedish companies were among the quickest to adopt the service. Today, many of Stockholm’s most successful tech companies base their businesses on Amazon’s cloud web facilities.

With new start-ups and traditional industries moving across to cloud services, AWS is rapidly growing its team in its Stockholm office.

“We are constantly expanding the team, are currently hiring, and will add to the number of people we have as our customer base continues to grow,” said Darren Mowry, the head of AWS' Nordic region.

AWS is by far the largest provider of cloud computing services in the world, and has facilitated the creation of startups like Airbnb and Uber.

It opened its first office in Stockholm recently and is now expanding with a branch in Finland. Stockholm will serve as its regional headquarters.

“Our strong presence in Sweden, and now Finland, means we are able to work even more closely with customers such as Sony, Schibsted, Ericsson, Telenor and Spotify to find innovative ways to use the cloud,” Mowry said. “Geographically Stockholm is very well placed.”

He sees some interesting trends in the region.

“Previously, some people in the Nordics had the perception that cloud is only used by start-ups and that larger, security conscious organizations will not use AWS for more than development and test environments. In Sweden we are seeing some of the largest and oldest organizations talking about how they are using AWS for their mission critical workloads” Mowry explained.

Indeed, in recent years more and more traditionally non-tech companies are moving large portions of their infrastructure to Amazon’s cloud services, from sectors such as utilities, financial services, oil and gas and transport.

“Cloud has become the new normal as companies of every size are now deploying new applications to the cloud by default, and looking to migrate as many of their existing applications as they can as quickly as possible,” Mowry said.

The company has previously said that Nordic customers are among the most innovative users of cloud computing in the world and that Stockholm is an interesting city because of its many technology talents.

Amazon Web Services is a collection of remote computing services that make up a cloud-computing platform offered by Amazon. It’s the American technology giant’s most profitable and fastest-growing part of its business.
