Spotify partners with Sony as music streaming battle heats up

Stockholm based online music phenomenon Spotify has signed a unique agreement with Sony, which will make the streaming service available on the Japanese tech giant’s PlayStation gaming consoles and Xperia phones.

The deal is being described by media commentators as a way to take on Apple and Google in the online music battle.Through this partnership, Sony Network Entertainment International will launch a new music destination called PlayStation Music, with Spotify as the exclusive partner.

"This partnership represents the best in music and the best in gaming coming together, which will benefit the vibrant and passionate communities of both Spotify and PlayStation Network,” said Andrew House, head of Sony Computer Entertainment. “We're thrilled to make Spotify the foundation of our strategy with PlayStation Music."

The move represents a huge deal for Spotify, which recently revealed it has 15 million users.

Daniel Ek, founder of Spotify, said he is “incredibly honoured” to partner with Sony and PlayStation.

"As a gamer and PlayStation 4 user myself, I'm super excited to be able to soundtrack my FIFA 15 Arsenal matches later this spring," he said.

Spotify on PlayStation Music will offer more than 30 million songs and 1.5 billion playlists. The deal marks the latest step in the battle to win control of the music streaming market. It comes as Apple is rumoured to relaunching its Beats streaming service, and follows Google's launch of YouTube music key.

Launched in Sweden in 2008, Spotify is now available in 58 markets globally with more than 60 million active users, and over 15 million paying subscribers. It has contributed more than $2 billion to music rights holders since its inception.
